Transforming Sheffield's higher education landscape
A testament to Robertson's expertise is the £8.4 million refurbishment of the Elmfield Building at the University of Sheffield. This 1930s structure, originally the Department for Glass Technology, underwent a comprehensive transformation, positioning it as a contemporary, energy-efficient, accessible, and economical facility for the Departments of Politics and Economics. The project included internal alterations, a new external lift, and a new floor above an existing lecture theatre. The original flooring, hardwood banisters, and commemorative mosaics were preserved, marrying historical charm with functionality.
Concurrently, Robertson undertook the refurbishment of the adjacent Goodwin Sports Centre Gymnasium, demonstrating our capacity to manage multiple projects within a live campus environment effectively.
Robertson has completed 7 projects for the University with a further £6m phase of works to the Edwardian Building set to complete late in 2025.
Advancing research and innovation
Robertson's role in constructing the Gene Therapy Innovation and Manufacturing Centre (GTIMC) at the University of Sheffield underscores a commitment to advanced research facilities. This centre is part of an £18 million network funded by LifeArc and the Medical Research Council, focussed on pioneering gene therapy treatments.

Our commitment to the Sheffield community
Beyond large-scale projects, Robertson actively engages with the Sheffield community. Our participation in educational initiatives, such as sessions at Chaucer School, reflects a dedication to nurturing future talent in the construction industry.
On our Advanced Technology Centre project at The Sheffield College, completed in 2025, we employed 30 local people, developed the careers of 4 apprentices and hosted 7 work placements.
Our commitment to sustainability
Robertson's emphasis on sustainable practices is evident in our projects, where energy-efficient systems and materials are standard. We ensure that developments not only meet current needs but also contribute positively to the environment and community well-being.
At the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre in Sheffield, we delivered a refurbishment involving sustainable technologies that supports the university's commitment to net zero emissions by 2030.
Our approach to sustainability is part of our responsible business policy and our purpose: to assure a sustainable future.
