Constructing an innovative teaching and leadership centre

Robertson Construction constructed an innovative teaching and leadership centre at the award-winning Sedgefield Community College, part of the Newcastle-based multi-academy trust, Laidlaw Schools Trust (LST).

This state-of-the-art new Teaching and Leadership Centre is being designed in partnership with Durham University. As well as providing much needed additional classroom space for the College, it will become the teacher training hub for Durham University's PGCE secondary-teacher-training students, enabling them to learn from subject leaders in the immersive setting of an 'outstanding' school.

Outstanding facilities for learning

The new building will feature an auditorium, five classroom spaces and communal space with a servery, office and toilets. These new facilities will mean that the existing PGCE training programme can be extended across all disciplines to benefit up to 120 students. It will also provide an amazing opportunity for all school leaders from the Laidlaw Schools Trust to accelerate their CPD while LST becomes a hub of education excellence for the North East.

"The building will challenge conventional thinking on circulation, break-out and flexible design. Multi-functional spaces will be used for collaborative learning, performances, and examinations for students, as well as being the centre for teaching and leadership development for regional education leaders."

Construction on time for the new academic year

The construction programme aims to see the new building by July 2021 in readiness for handover and fit out so that the facilities can be used at the start of the 2021–22 academic year.

Delivering effective Soft Landings

The new Teaching and Leadership Centre is being developed following Soft Landings principles. This means that post-handover support and aftercare is considered as an integral part of the process from the outset. This approach ensures that operational outcomes match the design intent, and that the needs of the building's users are met.

Sustainability

The new building will benefit from a complete replacement of plant, building services and controls, bringing facilities up to modern, energy-efficient standards. The works will be delivered by our in house Engineering Services team.
