The new school facility accommodates 1100 students in an effort by Perth & Kinross Council to accommodate Perth’s growing population in the new Bertha Park residential development.

The project is unique in the Scottish Government’s Schools for the Future programme, as it is an entirely new building and not a replacement for an existing school.

The brief was to deliver a brand-new facility to meet the needs of the whole of Bertha Park and landward community. It accommodates 1100 students, including 35 pupils with additional support needs (ASN). The facilities include a sports hall, gym, full size grass and synthetic football pitches, and an attached multi-use games area (MUGA).

This was a Team Robertson project, with Robertson Capital Projects managing the hub East Central Scotland framework through which it was procured, Robertson Tayside acted as main contractor and Robertson Civil Engineering delivered the bulk earthworks, groundworks, drainage, external works, and external services.

Community initiatives

During the build, donations were being made to local foodbanks, while T-shirts and sweatshirts were also donated to local primary schools.

The site team took part in a number of charitable causes including the Race for Life, as well as supporting donations for Cancer Research UK, The Archie Foundation & Macmillan Cancer Support.

The team also reduced waste by donating wooden pallets regularly to be used for the crafting of bird boxes.

Work experience

Six work placement students were taken on, getting the opportunity to work on different aspects of the build and gain knowledge of many aspects of working on site and a live construction project.

In addition, 15 apprentices from the Vocational Training Council (VTC) in Hong Kong were shown the project to learn about digital innovations in Scotland’s construction industry.
