Summary
Delivering Airedale Hospital’s new Urgent Treatment Centre
Robertson has successfully completed the transformation of existing office and ward space at Airedale General Hospital into a modern Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC), supporting the Trust’s vision to improve patient flow and reduce pressure on A&E services.
The UTC provides GP-led urgent care, open at least 12 hours a day, offering appointments via NHS 111 or GP referral. Designed to diagnose and treat common conditions that typically lead patients to attend emergency departments, the facility helps free capacity for more serious cases and enhances patient experience.
Project delivery overview
- Enabling works: access arrangements, temporary propping to the pathology department below, scaffold loading bay and roof scaffold installation, M&E isolation, and demolition/strip-out.
- Design development: architectural design, RAAC surveys and validation, and M&E design.
- Construction: installation of RAAC support structures, re-roofing, full fit-out of the UTC, commissioning of M&E systems, and final decoration.
Overcoming complex challenges
- Live hospital environment: the UTC sits above the pathology department, which remained operational throughout. Close liaison with hospital teams ensured sensitive equipment and processes were protected.
- RAAC panels: the building’s RAAC panel construction required structural surveys and temporary propping to mitigate risks of panel failure. All works were planned to avoid overloading fragile panels.
- Noise and vibration control: measures were implemented to minimise disruption to patients and staff, including scheduling noisy activities out of hours where possible.
Building more than infrastructure
