Summary
A new treatment centre for urgent minor injuries
Improving access to urgent care in Newcastle, this state-of-the-art urgent treatment centre at the Royal Victoria Infirmary provides dedicated facilities for patients with minor injuries and illnesses. By creating a separate department away from major emergencies, the centre helps enhance the patient experience while easing pressure on the neighbouring A&E department.
The project included a new reception and dedicated waiting areas for each service pathway, along with modern clinical spaces and a thoughtfully designed layout to enhance patient flow, streamline services and reduce waiting times.
Relieving strain on the Royal Infirmary
The new urgent treatment centre provides same day care for people who have a minor injury that cannot wait, for example an illness or injury that can’t be treated at home or with the support of a pharmacist. Each year, increasing numbers of people attend the RVI’s emergency department. Many do not have a life-threatening emergency, but they do need to be cared for quickly and with the help of a doctor or nurse.
Services are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and the centre’s location alongside the emergency department will make it accessible to patients. This proximity to the main hospital also allows for more flexible staffing and provide access to additional services if they’re needed.
Site history
The Royal Victoria Infirmary originally opened its doors in 1906. Before design work began, the team carried out a detailed site analysis, addressing a mix of challenges and opportunities that helped shape the design approach.
As a purpose-built addition to our RVI site, the centre will provide a dedicated and modern facility for people who need help with an urgent health need which cannot wait or be treated at home. Patients will be able to see the right person to meet their needs, through the centre’s team of doctors, nurses, therapists and other healthcare staff.”
Procurement route
The project was procured via Procure23. This is a healthcare framework which Robertson and the Trust are working in partnership on to deliver the Trust’s Capital Works Programme, following on from the previous successful completion of Freeman Hospital Day Treatment Centre.
