Summary
Modern renal care in a complex historic hospital setting
A modern, future-ready renal facility is being created within a constrained historic hospital environment, improving clinical spaces and enhancing the experience for patients and staff at Skipton General Hospital.
Robertson is delivering the refurbishment of the renal department at the hospital, transforming an existing space within a historic Victorian building into a modern clinical environment. Located on the first floor of a live hospital, the project will provide enhanced facilities to support the delivery of vital renal services for the local community.
Transforming a constrained and complex space
The works focus on the reconfiguration of a compact area within the existing hospital, replacing outdated facilities with a layout that supports modern clinical requirements. As the building has been opened up, additional improvements to floors, walls, and structural elements have been identified and incorporated, ensuring the facility is fit for long-term use.
Alongside this, the project includes upgrades to building services and infrastructure to support the revised clinical layout, creating a more efficient and resilient environment for both patients and staff.
Managing complexity in a live hospital
Delivered within a fully operational healthcare environment, the project requires careful coordination to maintain safe access and minimise disruption to patients, staff and hospital operations. Working within a constrained footprint and a historic structure, the team has adopted a flexible and responsive approach, addressing challenges as they arise and working closely with stakeholders to maintain progress.
The nature of the existing building has required ongoing investigation and coordination, with solutions developed collaboratively to ensure safe and effective delivery.
A collaborative and pragmatic approach
Working closely with Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Robertson has supported the project through early engagement in design development and sequencing, helping to inform buildability and manage risk. The team continues to take a practical, solution-focused approach, ensuring the project progresses effectively despite the complexities of the environment.
The project is also delivering targeted social value outcomes, including engagement with local schools and colleges, apprenticeship and training opportunities, and the use of local supply chain partners. These initiatives support skills development and ensure the project contributes positively to the local community alongside the delivery of improved healthcare facilities.
Creating a future-ready healthcare environment
On completion, the refurbished renal unit will provide an improved clinical environment for patients and staff, supporting the safe and efficient delivery of renal services. The upgraded facility will enhance patient experience, improve operational functionality, and ensure the department is aligned with current healthcare standards.
