A new Gynaecological Oncology Centre to support woman’s health
The new Northern Gynaecological Oncology Centre (NGOC) offers increased privacy and specialist regional care for women receiving complex treatment and advanced care for gynaecological cancer. The centre improves access to personalised, evidence-based treatment and supports complex care pathways in a modern, purpose-built environment.
A new space for younger patients
The new Children and Young People’s Department has been designed with a focus on a calming environment, age-appropriate play areas and welcome spaces to help reduce anxiety and to help support a more positive hospital experience, as hospital visits can be daunting especially for younger patients. Wooden feature trees have been installed in the reception area and main day room, funded by an £18,000 donation from the legacy of Gwen Sells through Gateshead Health Charity.
Bringing a historic building up to today’s standards
Work began in January 2025 and focused on refurbishing two former inpatient wards in the hospital’s original 1930s building. Queen Elizabeth Facilities and Robertson Construction North East carried out the refurbishment to bring the departments in line with modern healthcare standards.
Community impact
The project delivered a significant boost to the local economy, with 94% of total spend directed to small and medium-sized enterprises, ensuring that investment supported the businesses most rooted in the community. Notably, 90% of all expenditure remained within 30 miles of the hospital, reinforcing the project’s commitment to local growth and long-term regional impact.
“It moves us forward in our ambition to be a centre of excellence for women’s health and ensures our children’s services are delivered in spaces that feel calm, supportive and fit for the future. I’m proud of what has been achieved and grateful to everyone involved.”
