From innovation to industrialisation: Pulpex’s journey to funding a high-capacity fibre bottle plant
Robertson Central West is delivering the contract to build a facility near Glasgow, which will be capable of manufacturing 50 million fibre-produced bottles each year. The sustainable packing company secured a £62 million investment from the National Wealth Fund and the Scottish National Investment Bank. The project involves the construction of a new 87,000 sqft unit to an existing industrial warehouse.

Groundbreaking design
Pulpex has developed a patented, fibre-based bottle made from sustainably sourced wood pulp. Unlike many alternative materials, the solution contains no hidden plastic and is designed to be recycled through standard household paper and card recycling streams. The resulting product is fully recyclable, biodegradable, and delivers a significantly lower carbon footprint compared to traditional glass or plastic packaging formats.
Pulpex’s proprietary technology is both scalable and commercially viable, enabling the production of fibre bottles at industrial volumes without compromising sustainability or performance. This positions the company as a leader in next-generation packaging innovation.
How are the bottles manufactured?
The bottles are produced by wet-moulding fibre into single-piece containers using highly advanced technology. The containers are then dried before being sprayed internally with a proprietary food-grade coating designed to be compatible with the products they are holding.
Supporting investment and growth
Securing financing to build its first commercial-scale manufacturing facility marks a major milestone for Pulpex. The new facility will support production at scale, create 36 new jobs, and help stimulate growth across Scotland’s emerging alternative packaging sector, while strengthening the UK’s position in sustainable manufacturing.
Market impact
Currently operating from its R&D and pilot production facility in Cambridge, England. Pulpex has already established partnerships with major global FMCG brands including Diageo, Unilever, and Kraft Heinz. Through these collaborations, the company is developing bespoke fibre-based packaging solutions in preparation for commercial launch.
“Just last month, we announced that Glasgow had been chosen as one of four areas where the UK Government will develop investment pipelines and this new Pulpex facility, to be built on the outskirts of the city, is a prime example of how supporting regional growth will benefit people right across the UK. The firm’s innovative bottling solution will aid the decarbonisation of our packaging industry and help accelerate our Net Zero goals as we drive delivery of clean power by 2030.”
