Summary
King Edwin Primary is the new home for the former Amble First School
Robertson delivered two new modern school facilities in Amble, Northumberland to cater for a range of needs.
The King Edwin Primary and Barndale-by-the-Sea schools were delivered as a redevelopment of the former Amble Middle School site in South Avenue.
The new King Edwin Primary features an early year’s wing, library, sports hall, outdoor space and playing fields.
Barndale-by-the-Sea caters for pupils with a range of neurodiverse needs. It features bespoke classrooms and therapy rooms, a life skills studio, home economics classroom, STEM classroom and library. It is part of Northumberland County Council’s £39m wider investment in the Coquet Partnerships of schools that aim to transform education, sports and community facilities in the area.
Building community wealth
During the development of King Edwin Primary, Robertson Construction North East directly employed a total of 6.4 full-time equivalent (FTE) staff residing within a 30-mile radius of the site. A further 492 local employees have been employed across the project utilising the local Robertson supply chain.
In addition, Robertson has worked closely with the local recruitment agencies to offer full time employment opportunities to three local people that had previously been classed as “Long Term Unemployed” which has generated a further £39,019.39 in added social value to the local economy.
Total Social Value Generated through Local Employment - £241,636.99.
Community donations
Throughout the duration of the project, donations of site materials were made to HMP Northumberland’s Wood Workshop. These contributions have played a vital role in supporting the Oswin Project, enabling inmates to develop valuable woodworking skills and create high-quality garden furniture.
In addition to fostering craftsmanship, the donations have enhanced the inmates' employability prospects, equipping them with practical skills that will support their successful reintegration into the community upon release.
Volunteering
In August 2024, several members of the Robertson Management team, together with the Procure Partnership Framework, dedicated 20 hours to a Family Beach Clean Up event at Warkworth Beach. During the day, five full black bin bags of waste, including microplastics, fishing debris, tin cans, and dog waste bags, were collected from the beach and dunes.
Despite Warkworth Beach being one of the cleanest in the UK, the fact that five bags of rubbish were removed in just one day highlights the ongoing challenge of protecting our local coastline.
