Summary
Specialist care apartments for those with additional needs
Robertson Construction North East is delivering the contract for an Extra Care project on Benton Road in South Shields, following the successful delivery of an Extra Care scheme in Hebburn. The project involves the construction of a new extra care facility, comprising 124 one- and two-bedroom apartments, along with a restaurant and community facilities.
The development spans 11,498 m² and includes associated external works and site clearance. This 124-apartment scheme will help address the shortage of supported accommodation within the borough, providing much-needed housing for people aged 18 and over who require additional support to live independently.

The scheme will also include flexible multi-use spaces for activities, available for use by local community groups, alongside a bistro café open to the general public. The development features 25 dementia-friendly apartments, shared activity areas, landscaped outdoor spaces, and a public café designed to encourage wider community engagement.
Designed for sustainable living
The apartments will be highly energy efficient, with heating and hot water to be powered by air source heat pumps, with additional energy generated through roof mounted solar PV panels.
Strategic partnership
We are working in strategic partnership with Karbon, supporting them to deliver 2,324 new affordable homes across the North East and Yorkshire by 2028, 10% of which will be new homes for people requiring additional support needs.
Procurement route
Benton Road will be the second Extra Care facility built by Robertson for Karbon and South Tyneside Council, the first being a 95-apartment scheme in Hebburn town centre.
Its delivery will be part-funded by Homes England, through Karbon’s Strategic Partnership with the Government’s housing delivery agency.
“That’s why we’re committed to providing a range of specialist accommodation options across South Tyneside so that people with different needs can remain living with support in the borough, staying connected to the places and people that matter most to them.”
