School construction: 50 projects completed since 2020
With 50 school projects completed between 2020 and 2025, Robertson has extensive experience in school construction across primary, secondary and all-through schools, as well as learning campuses and community campuses with shared public facilities. Our experience in building new schools covers projects of varying scales and requirements, from individual schools to larger education developments designed to serve the wider community.
We also deliver specialist educational environments, including Special Educational Needs (SEN) and Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) schools. Projects such as Croft Community SEN School in Durham demonstrate our ability to create safe, inclusive environments designed around the specific needs of pupils, staff and the wider school community.
Our buildings are designed and delivered to meet modern educational building standards, with an emphasis on energy efficiency to help keep ongoing running costs low. We incorporate sustainable approaches including net zero and Passivhaus principles where required, while prioritising learning and wellbeing for today’s young people. Our projects feature outdoor learning facilities, flexible internal spaces and the latest teaching technology, with shared facilities often open to the community to maximise the efficiency and long-term value of public buildings.
Education construction in live school environments
Our Tandem Build approach enables new school facilities to be delivered while existing schools remain operational, helping to minimise disruption to pupils, staff and the wider school community. This requires careful planning, phased delivery and close coordination with school leadership, particularly when working on occupied sites and around term-time activities. Our teams carefully manage site access, logistics, noise and interfaces between new and existing facilities to maintain a safe and functional learning environment throughout construction.
Projects such as Hazlehead Academy Campus in Aberdeen and Monifieth Learning Campus demonstrate our experience of delivering complex education projects within live school environments. By carefully sequencing construction and handover, new facilities can be brought into use while existing accommodation remains operational, allowing subsequent phases of work to progress safely and efficiently. This approach combines our educational building construction expertise with the programme, stakeholder management and site coordination required for school building construction in occupied environments.
Education construction frameworks and routes to market
Local authorities can appoint Robertson through a range of established education construction frameworks across Scotland, Northern England and Wales, providing compliant routes to market for new schools, school refurbishments and education design and build projects.
Our framework positions include YORbuild, Procure Partnerships Framework, Procurement Hub, North West Construction Hub, NEUPC, NEPO, hub East Central Scotland and hub North Scotland.
Through these, customers can access proven education delivery expertise, streamlined procurement processes and early engagement with our project teams.
Depending on the framework and project requirements, Robertson can be appointed through direct award, mini-competition, two-stage procurement, early contractor involvement and design and build routes. This flexibility enables clients to select the approach that best supports programme certainty, stakeholder engagement and value for money.
Through our framework appointments, we have delivered a wide range of education projects, including primary schools, secondary schools, learning campuses and specialist SEND facilities.

School and education refurbishment
Our education refurbishment experience covers the extension, remodelling and upgrading of existing schools, including complex projects delivered within live and occupied environments. We work closely with clients and school communities to plan works around teaching requirements, maintaining safe and functional learning environments while improvements are carried out. Our school refurbishment projects range from targeted upgrades to large, phased programmes of works.
Perth Academy in Perth demonstrates our experience of delivering a major refurbishment through an eight-phase programme, including classroom, roofing, structural, electrical and specialist teaching space upgrades. At Bramhall High School, we delivered a £2m refurbishment programme to address reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC), with works phased to safely restore affected areas. We have also refurbished existing facilities to create specialist educational environments, including Bank View South SEND School in Liverpool, where phased works transformed a former school into new SEND provision.
Our school refurbishment contractors combine construction expertise with careful programme and stakeholder management, enabling us to upgrade existing education buildings while minimising disruption and extending the life and value of school estates.

Mynyydd Isa Campus – constructing a net zero school building
Leading the way in low energy education buildings, we proudly delivered the Mynyydd Isa Campus to the highest sustainable construction standards.
It was designed to achieve a BREEAM Excellent certification and be carbon neutral in operation. Developed for WEPCo and officially completed in June 2025, Mynyyd Isa is an shining example of school building construction in North Wales which accommodates the needs of 1,300 pupils. Throughout the course of the project, 3,076 weeks training weeks were offered to apprentices, and 207 jobs were also generated. Spaces were carefully curated for flexibility and function and to allow young people from nursery to high school to utilise outdoor facilities. There are flexible, external play spaces, sports areas and a flood-lit weather grass pitch, allowing young people to learning in high-quality outdoor environments.
