Construction of 80 apartments at former shipyard

Smokehouses is a £14.5 million project at Smith’s Dock, North Shields, due for completion in Autumn 2018. The site on the River Tyne is a joint venture for our clients Places for People and Urban Splash who are creating a new coastal neighbourhood of contemporary living.

Regenerating a dockyard area

Dating back to 1851, Smith's Dock was a former shipyard which closed its doors over 30 years ago. The Smith's Dock development plan sees a mixture of housing and leisure for today's modern lifestyles.

The development, a partnership between Places for People and Urban Splash, is helping to transform the former shipyard site. In addition to the 80 apartments constructed by Robertson, townhouses will also be built on the site.

Future plans for residential properties will bring further life into this exceptional region of the North East.

High quality apartments

The two new build apartment blocks, designed by SimpsonHaugh, created on the river with fantastic views. In total there are 80 flats which include one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments and duplexes. All homes are being finished with concrete living area ceilings and industrial exposed electrical fittings, ensuring the most up-to-date trends for modern living.

Building services

Robertson Engineering Services provided the mechanical and electrical installation for this project.
Services comprised district gas fired heating, domestic hot and cold water services, sprinklers, fire alarm, access control, TV/ broadband capability and electrical domestic supply to each property.
Above ground drainage and coordinated sanitaryware was installed to the ensuite bathrooms.
Each apartment has a mechanical ventilation heat recovery unit with external ventilation louvres built into the external cladding.
