The 5.6-hectare development is one of the largest in Fife Council’s affordable housing programme. Completed in spring 2017, it creates 2,700 new homes overall, providing a mixture of housing suitable for all members of the community.

An area of derelict, brownfield land on the site of the former Glencast Foundry has been transformed into much-needed local housing.

The homes at Methil Brae were delivered by Robertson Partnership Homes with timber frame supplied by Robertson Timber Engineering. The dry dash roughcast, concrete roof tiles and single-ply veranda roofing were  provided by Robertson Specialist Division. Work started in August 2015 and was completed in March 2017.

Efficient off-site process

Construction of the timber frame involved off-site manufacture where panels were produced in a controlled factory environment, reducing wastage of materials and ensuring that a high-quality product is delivered ready to be installed. The increased speed and efficiency of this process allows trade subcontractors to get on site sooner, enabling them to complete properties in line with the tight construction programme.

Rooted in the community

An area of public open space was also created along the site's river frontage to accommodate the River Leven footpath link and to create an attractive and high-quality landscaped edge.

This project is rooted in the community and we were delighted to be working with local subcontractors during the build. We have also given local apprentices the opportunity to gain valuable skills and experience in the construction sector, helping them onto the career ladder in the process.

The first ten families moved into their new properties following a handover ceremony in September 2016.

The houses are modern, fit for purpose, and energy efficient, delivering on our commitment to warmer, drier, healthier homes which aim to tackle fuel poverty and improve living standards.
