Deputy First Minister officially opens Bun-Sgoil Ghàidhlig Phort Rìgh

Third standalone Gaelic medium School

The Highland Council officially opened the new Gaelic Medium School at Portree today (Monday 3 September 2018).

Bun-Sgoil Ghàidhlig Phort Rìgh is the third standalone Gaelic Medium School and is part of The Highland Council’s Gaelic Language Plan.

The school presently has 133 Primary Pupils and 47 in the Nursery, with capacity to expand over future years.

Deputy First Minister, John Swinney, said:

"It is a pleasure to be involved in supporting Highland Council to realise their vision for the Gaelic Language.

"We are seeing growing demand from parents for access to Gaelic Medium education across the country which clearly demonstrates that the Scottish Government's commitments to supporting the language are a having a positive result.

"I commend Highland Council for their actions and look forward to working with them on future projects."

Cllr Alister MacKinnon, Highland Council's Budget Leader, Chair of Gaelic Implementation & Strategy Group and Chair of Corporate Resources said:

"Bun-Sgoil Ghà idhlig Phort Rìgh is a great asset for the community which gives the young people and their families the opportunity to access their learning in an all- Gaelic environment."

Frank Reid, Managing Director, Robertson Northern said:

The school has already been warmly welcomed by locals, which we believe is because it celebrates the vibrant heritage of Skye and the West Highland community.



"While our work at Bun-Sgoil Ghà idhlig Phort Rìgh is now complete, we are pleased to say that we continue to work with Highland Council on other important projects including Merkinch Primary and Family Centre in Inverness, with the project procured through the Scape Major Works – Scotland framework, part of the National Construction framework."
