Summary
Improved facilities for pupils and the local community
Robertson Construction North East has delivered a new £6.5m education project for Northumberland County Council. We constructed a new sports hall and single-storey extension at the King Edward VI School. These new facilities will both enhance the PE experience for pupils and be available for the local community to use, as along with a new 3G pitch, which will be delivered by the Football Foundation Charity.
Sustainable design
The steel-frame sports hall incorporated modern mechanical and electrical systems, including underfloor heating and rooftop photovoltaic panels. Sustainability and efficiency were key priorities, with off-site manufacturing forming an important part of the design. On-site material were reused to reduce waste throughout construction.
With the new sports hall now complete, existing PE spaces will be repurposed into additional classrooms to help accommodate a growing student population.
Site works
The new facilities were created on the site of an underused all-weather hockey pitch. After construction was completed, we carried out landscaping works, a footpath link and new drainage system connections.
Tree protection fencing had been assembled to the West boundary, ensuring no existing trees were to be removed. Using field gate access from a nearby lane allowed us to be completely independent from school areas, ensuring absolute safety.
Building strong relationships
Robertson delivered the project under a design and build contract following the redevelopment of Amble Middle School into the King Edwin Primary and Barndale-by-the-Sea schools for the Council. King Edwin Primary includes an early years wing, library, hall, outdoor space and playing fields, whilst Barndale-by-the-Sea caters for pupils with a range of neurodiverse needs.
