Delivering a transformational school campus for Hazlehead and surrounding communities
Hazlehead Academy Campus is situated to the west of Aberdeen, around 2 miles from the AWPR. The campus will serve up to 1,600 pupils, including those from Countesswells and Kingswells, expanding the catchment area.
Robertson is delivering the new campus, which will be a three-storey building with a roof void plant room, facing brickwork complemented by rainscreen cladding, a pitched roof, and large integrated photovoltaic (PV) panels. Outdoor facilities include two full-size all-weather pitches and an athletics sprint track, supported in part by £100,000 from sportscotland's Sport Facilities Fund.
Hazlehead Academy Campus is the first project in the North Schools Programme, a hub North Scotland initiative bringing five local authorities together to deliver new school estate.

Architectural features to enhance performance and user experience
The campus has been designed to prioritise natural light and energy efficiency, creating spaces that will be both functional and comfortable to use. Large window openings will bring daylight deep into classrooms and shared areas, supporting the learning environment while contributing to a clean, contemporary façade.
Integrated louvres will support effective ventilation, helping to maintain consistent air quality and a healthier indoor environment for pupils or anyone using the facilities. A roof void plant room and integrated photovoltaic (PV) panels will generate renewable energy, reducing carbon emissions while helping to lower long-term operational costs.
We have carefully selected materials, including facing brick and rainscreen cladding, to provide durability and support thermal performance, ensuring the building performs efficiently over time. The pitched roof design will allow for effective water drainage and simplified maintenance, contributing to long-term reliability and value.
Operational planning to minimise disruption and maintain continuity
Robertson has planned the new campus to ensure the existing Hazlehead Academy continues to operate effectively throughout the build. Locating the development on the existing playing fields allows day-to-day school activities to continue with minimal interruption.
The team will manage construction activity to reduce impact on pupils and staff, scheduling plant and material deliveries ahead of the school day. This approach supports a safe and calm environment during peak times while maintaining the normal operation of the school.
Secure site fencing and clearly controlled access points will maintain separation between construction and operational areas. These measures prioritise safety at all times while protecting the learning environment and allowing the school to function as usual during the works.
When this campus is complete it will provide a high-quality, sustainable learning environment that supports teaching excellence and will enrich the lives of its pupils.
