Creating a vibrant, adaptable space for business
Within the Arcade, two new pavilions have been installed and improved toilet facilities provided. All entrances have been renovated to enhance the market’s visibility and have been fitted with glazed, automatic sliding doors to help reduce draughts.
Decor, wayfinding and signage in the alleys have also been enhanced, building upon the original designs found throughout the market. The external areas surrounding the entrances have also been upgraded.
Rejuvenating a historic site
Final surveys were carried out on the site, built in 1835, and traders, whose businesses remained open throughout the works were consulted on the plans.
The project was completed in March 2026, successfully overcoming a number of challenges, including ageing utility supplies within the market and the presence of a listed air raid shelter beneath part of the site.
Restoration projects across Newcastle
Robertson has delivered a string of City Council projects, including several schools and also led the redevelopment of the iconic Pattern Shop, a Grade 2 Listed structure brought back to life as a business centre in the city’s Stephenson Quarter.
