Meet the apprentice: Fletcher's take on life as an Apprentice Multi-Skilled Engineer
Now in the second year of his trade apprenticeship with Robertson Facilities Management, here's what Fletcher has to say about his role and experience so far.
Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship?
I chose an apprenticeship as I believe it offers the most for someone that’s fresh out of school and helps you learn a lot of life skills.
What does your role involve?
I help to carry out planned maintenance for our facilities management customers to ensure their buildings continue to work to optimal efficiency. It can involve reactive work too – if equipment breaks down or we come across an unexpected issue then we must act as quickly and safely as possible to minimise downtime.
In terms of studies I'm working towards a SVQ Level 3 (SCQF Level 7) in Service and Maintenance at Glasgow Kelvin College.
What aspect are you enjoying most about the role?
I'm part of a team supporting a fire and rescue facilities management contract. I really enjoy the sites I get to visit as it makes every day at work a bit different and interesting.
What's the most challenging part?
That would be when we get a Priority 1 call, which requires an immediate response, and it turns into a big job. Making the site and assets safe for our customers and ourselves is our first task.
Any advice for someone thinking of applying for a trade or modern apprenticeship?
Apprenticeships can seem like a scary thing for a lot of people but they are also one of the best opportunities out there. There are so many different apprenticeships that cover a huge variety of jobs which can set you up for a great future.
What's the biggest benefit of an apprenticeship?
I would say the qualification you can get at the end of your apprenticeship which is a huge bonus.
What do you like about working at Robertson?
Robertson offers a lot of great benefits that I can take advantage of. I also find that people are very friendly and caring towards each other, so it's an enjoyable working environment.
