Robertson completes transformation of iconic Newcastle retail landmark
Grainger Market, Newcastle’s oldest and one of its most iconic retail landmarks, has fully reopened following a major transformation programme to secure its future for generations to come.
The works, led by main contractor Robertson Construction North East, preserve the Grade I listed building’s historic character whilst broadening its appeal and creating a destination comparable with leading European markets.
Described by project Architects FaulknerBrowns as “one of the best, if not the best, of the UK’s purpose-designed indoor markets”, Grainger Market has successfully traded for nearly 200 years.
The refurbishment has delivered two new pavilions at either end of the Arcade to strengthen its role as a social destination, providing space for eating, meeting and events, including live performances and pop-up activities.
Work also included new tiling, upgraded entrances, improved wayfinding, and refurbished toilets. Externally, the market now features new paving, signage and planting, creating a more welcoming and visually appealing frontage.
Neil Kennedy, Regional Managing Director at main contractor Robertson Construction North East, said: “Grainger Market has been at the heart of Newcastle’s retail and cultural landscape for generations, and the transformative work carried out ensures this Grade I listed building will continue to play a crucial role in the city centre for years to come. Importantly, the market remained fully operational throughout our works which have improved sustainability and created new spaces.
“The project showcased our collaborative approach through close liaison with traders, the local community and the supply chain to bring the council’s vision to life.”
Through the project, Robertson diverted 100% of waste from landfill, supported over 300 apprenticeship weeks and employed 18 local people, while 89% of spend was with a local supply chain.
Cllr Karen Kilgour, Leader of Newcastle City Council, said: "This is an incredibly exciting time for our great city. A walk through the city centre reveals the scale of development and opportunity on offer, but Newcastle is also a place of people and community, and they are at the heart of everything we do.
“The Grainger Market is a perfect example of this. We are privileged to have such a distinctive asset in the city centre, one that is not only a striking and historic building but also a thriving community shaped over generations by loyal traders and customers. Their dedication has been central to everything achieved in the market in recent years.
“With the completion of these transformative works, we now have a market truly fit for the future: a vibrant destination offering retail alongside leisure and culture, and a platform for ongoing growth and opportunity. It is a defining moment for Newcastle, and I look forward to seeing the market continue to flourish in the years ahead."
The refurbishment placed a high importance on sustainability, beginning with the construction practices on site. Working in an enclosed space (with parts still open to the public), electric plant, such as electric excavator and dumpers, was prioritised, producing zero on-site emissions.
Compared to traditional methods, electric plant and tools also reduced noise pollution minimising disruption to the live market. Powered by 100% renewable energy tariffs, this also aligned with Robertson and the Council’s shared commitment to sustainable construction.
