Summary
Upgrading and modernising crucial facilities
Robertson upgraded facilities at the 4-storey Tay Bridge control tower and administration centre, located on Dundee’s waterfront. Connecting Dundee, the wider Tayside area and Fife, this bridge is vital for the area and Scotland’s wider transport network.
The Tay Road Bridge Joint Board needed to refurbish and modernise the facility, including:
- Upgrade office, meeting and welfare spaces/kitchen facilities.
- Install improved weather and vehicle monitoring systems.
- Replace cladding and windows to improve energy efficiency.
- Refurbish and combine two mess rooms into one.

Keeping vital infrastructure running on a live construction site
The Tay Road Bridge Control Tower employs 22 people who work in shifts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Robertson managed the refurbishment project within this live environment, ensuring the facility continued to run effectively. We kept working areas separate from live areas, resulting in no disruption to day-to-day operations for staff.
Providing social value in uncertain economic times
Working with Dundee Health & Social Care Partnership, Robertson provided a 12-week work placement in our design team for someone who had been made redundant.
Reducing waste through an efficient construction programme
Working collaboratively with the customer's Design and Operational teams, we were able to refine the design and refurbishment programme by repurposing an internal mess room to house the temporary control room during refurbishment works, negating the need for a temporary external portacabin. This proactive recommendation reduced waste and saved money for the customer.
Procurement
The project was procured through the Procurement Hub – Major Projects framework, speeding up delivery and building in value-for-money and social value guarantees.
