Creating an accessible learning environment

The new £4.8m autism centre provides specially-designed learning spaces to support the education and care of young people with learning needs.

The purpose-built facility offers extra classroom space, group and breakout areas. The building is designed to maximise natural light, with acoustics that lower noise levels for children who have difficulty processing auditory sensory output. Walls within the building are gently curved to introduce new environments gradually.

During construction the site team took part in a 4D sensory session, using a video projection of the site to involve pupils and students in the building process of their new school. We also delivered a special community engagement programme, arranging site visits to suit the varied needs of pupils who went on to publish artwork and construction progress updates in a newsletter as part of the Robertson Reporters initiative – watch the film to see our work in action.
