Creating a modern digital learning environment at Abertay University

Creating additional high-quality digital learning space for students and staff, the refurbishment of Room 2008 in Abertay University's Old College Building transformed a historic teaching space into a modern 96-seat PC lab.

Robertson Construction Tayside delivered the project, carefully balancing modern functionality with the preservation of the building's listed heritage by restoring and incorporating original features dating back more than 110 years. The upgraded facility enhances the student experience while helping to ease timetabling pressures ahead of the new academic term.

Creating modern learning environments

The refurbishment transformed existing teaching spaces to support modern learning requirements. Works included the removal of existing room elements, alterations to the raised timber floor and floor boxes, and modifications to power, data, heating and electrical systems.

Further improvements included refurbishing of existing windows, levelling floor surfaces, repairing and redecorating walls and ceilings, and installing new lighting, carpet tiles, AV equipment, signage, blinds, ceiling baffles and furniture. Fire protection and mechanical and electrical upgrades were also incorporated throughout.

Overcoming challenges in a live learning environment

Working within the existing building presented several technical challenges. Careful investigation of the original lath-and-plaster ceiling was required to identify the timber joists needed to support the new acoustic baffles, as direct fixing to the ceiling was not possible.

Once the joists were located, our supply chain partner Allied Interiors installed the Ecophon M491 baffle hook system using support bars, brackets and suspension wires to ensure secure installation and consistent alignment. The team also co-ordinated alterations to the existing heating system, including draining the system to replace thermostatic radiator valve (TRV) heads with new pipe blocks.

Preserving heritage features

Retaining the character of the existing building was a key priority throughout the refurbishment. Two original heritage doors were carefully restored by WBS Keillor, while Dundee-based RJS Manufacturing produced a replacement door to complement the existing features. All doors were treated with fire-retardant varnish before installation.

This approach retained important architectural details while bringing the refurbished spaces in line with modern safety requirements.

Community impact and social value

The Abertay Small Works project strengthened Robertson's relationship with the university and acted as a catalyst for discussions around a Memorandum of Understanding to support students through initiatives such as work placements and mentoring.

Robertson also supported Abertay University's Ada Scotland Festival, which aims to inspire young people to explore careers in STEM, computing, cyber security and the games industry, while encouraging greater diversity across these sectors.

Route to market

Delivered through our Abertay University Framework, this project forms part of a wider, long-term relationship with the University. Our continued involvement builds understanding of its estate and priorities, helping us deliver each project efficiently while contributing to its longer-term plans.

Giving young people the opportunity to discover new interests, explore future pathways and learn more about STEM subjects is hugely important. Helping young people progress into education and employment is one of the key themes in our social impact policy, and supporting the Ada Scotland Festival through our ongoing relationship with Abertay University reflects that focus.
