Robertson begins work to create major new town centre venue in Redcar
Robertson Construction North East continues its strong relationship with Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council as work starts on the delivery of the town’s new family culture and entertainment venue and library.
The major regeneration project forms part of the wider Redcar Town Deal, aiming to revitalise the town centre and drive long-term economic growth. The development will deliver a modern, multi-purpose venue that integrates cultural, educational, and entertainment facilities.
The building will include a reimagined central library, indoor family leisure attractions, and improved connections between the town centre and seafront, creating a vibrant, year-round destination for both residents and visitors.
The scheme will house a state-of-the-art library designed to support digital access, community learning, and children’s engagement through immersive storytelling spaces and a dedicated makerspace.
Complementing these facilities, a new outdoor events space will offer a flexible platform for community use, enhancing Redcar’s cultural offer while encouraging greater footfall across the high street.
The development has been designed with natural light and coastal views in mind, using materials and architectural features that reflect the town’s seaside character.
Works commenced after the demolition of the former M&S and Goodwins buildings and surveys and design work with adjoining property owners were concluded.
The project is expected to support local job creation, stimulate increased visitor numbers, and offer a significant boost to local businesses - positioning Redcar as a stronger, more resilient town centre destination.
Robertson Construction North East is also currently leading the comprehensive redevelopment of the Grade II listed Redcar Central Station. This project aims to transform the currently vacant and deteriorating Victorian-era building into a vibrant, multifunctional hub that integrates transport, leisure, and retail facilities.
Neil Kennedy, Regional Managing Director, Robertson Construction North East, said: “As main contractor, we look forward to continuing our strong relationship with Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council, with Robertson Construction North East leading the delivery of this landmark project. This vibrant development represents a significant regeneration opportunity for boosting the local economy, creating jobs and providing a welcoming space for the community.
“Drawing on our extensive experience in delivering high-quality transformational projects, our team will ensure that the vision for this development is reflected throughout the construction process."
Chair of the Redcar Town Deal Catherine Clennett said: “We are very excited to see works recommence and are looking forward to seeing the site take shape. The aim is to provide an indoor family entertainment venue and an outdoor event space leading people from the beachfront and esplanade through to the high street to help regeneration of the town centre. This represents a great investment in the town to enhance both resident and visitor experience.”
Deputy Leader of Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council and Cabinet Member for Climate and Culture Cllr Carrie Richardson said: “This attraction will provide an exciting new entertainment venue for all the family, which will be fantastic for local residents and visitors all year round. It will also bring in new opportunities for tourism, meaning more people will visit our local hospitality businesses and town centre shops. I can’t wait to see the attraction open and the change it will bring to Redcar.”
