Robertson begins restoration of historic Newcastle University building

Robertson Construction North East has been appointed main contractor to restore Newcastle University’s Grade II listed Henderson Hall following extensive fire damage.

The former student accommodation building was severely damaged by fire in 2023, leaving much of the property without a roof and vulnerable to significant weather deterioration. Robertson has worked closely with Newcastle University throughout the pre-construction, surveying and design phases to help safeguard the historic building for future generations and has now begun repair work.

Initial work will focus on making the 1930s building wind and watertight through the full replacement of the traditional tiled roof and dormer windows.

Robertson Timber Engineering will supply and erect the timber roof structure, which will be manufactured offsite to maximise efficiency, reduce waste and ensure consistent quality.

Repairs will be carried out to the external façade, including structural repairs, restoration of chimneys and upper-floor party walls, as well as the removal of water-damaged internal finishes.

Jon Parker, Senior Project Manager, Estates and Facilities at Newcastle University said: “We’re really pleased that work to repair Henderson Old Hall is now able to begin. Our immediate priority is to ensure the building is permanently weatherproof and watertight, while carrying out the repairs with the care and sensitivity that a historic building like Henderson Hall requires."

Neil Kennedy, Regional Managing Director, Robertson Construction North East, said: “We have strong experience in restoring and enhancing listed buildings and, together with our close working relationship with Newcastle University, are well placed to deliver this project. Being trusted with the design and build almost 100 years after the building was first constructed is a real privilege, and we look forward to seeing work progress as we bring Henderson Hall back into use for generations to come.”

Robertson has partnered with Newcastle University for almost a decade, delivering major projects including, including the Farrell Centre and new clinical facilities for the Dental Hospital at the Royal Victoria Hospital.
