Award for Bolton Central Library’s new chapter
The restoration and refurbishment of Bolton Central Library was celebrated last week as the £4.4m project picked up the prize for Best Regeneration and Conservation at the North West Regional Construction Awards.
In a strong field, judges were unanimous in their decision, describing the work – led by Robertson Construction North West on behalf of Clear Futures through its strategic partnership for Bolton Council – as a ‘brilliant project’ with clear community impact.
Originally built in the 1930s, the Grade II listed building has been carefully restored to its former glory as well as refurbishing it for modern use, providing new creative and social spaces.
Since completion, the library service has already seen a dramatic increase in usage with new and old visitors attracted from a wide demographic.
Judges were impressed at how the project was completed whilst the library remained open and how an effective engagement strategy ensured that it ‘met stakeholder needs and managed challenges and surprises along the way.’

Congratulations to everyone involved. Having won the regional award, the project will now go on to the National Constructing Excellence Awards this November.
