Complex services installation for a historic refurbishment
The Robertson Engineering Services team completed a full M&E installation as part of the refurbishment and extension of a historic Georgian schoolhouse, helping our North East construction team deliver a five-star boutique hotel for Northumberland Estates.
A four-storey extension and sympathetic refurbishment created a stunning, high-quality hotel with 33 bedrooms and 14 suites, while preserving the character of this beautiful building.

Full M&E installation in a Grade II Listed Building
Our expert engineering services team delivered a comprehensive mechanical and electrical installation, carried out with meticulous attention to detail to preserve the features of the listed building. This included complex routing of mechanical and electrical pipework around historic structures to preserve there heritage character of the environment.
Electrical works comprised power, lighting and chandeliers and all electrical services throughout the extension and historic part of the building, including fire alarms, data and access controls.
We installed a large, specially selected feature light in the main staircase, which was assembled in sections on site.
Mechanical services included a traditional wet heating system, with cast iron panel radiators, together with hot and cold water services. Fittings in keeping with the historic building, including free standing baths, some weighing up to 80kg, were installed to give the rooms the premium feel required.
The large cast iron radiators were built in sections on site, creating a period-style architectural feature in both the bedrooms and public areas of the hotel.
In the new build extension, a VRF heating and cooling system with supply and extract ventilation was installed.
Local ties to a historic building
The project has seen the refurbishment of the former Georgian Duchess High School building. Neil Charlton, manager of our in-house engineering services team, was once a pupil there and recalled: “My old form room is now one of the luxury bedrooms. It’s great to see an historic building brought back to life, especially with so many local people involved in the team."
