Empowering young people through sustainable innovation and educational equity

Robertson is setting a bold milestone in education and sustainability with the Futures Institute at Dollar Academy (FIDA). Designed by the acclaimed architect Andrew Whalley OBE, FIDA serves as an open-access learning hub hosting a pioneering educational programme to empower Scotland’s next generation of leaders across the creative arts, STEM, sustainable business, and innovation.

Meeting the demands of a ground breaking project

The heart of the building will feature a geodesic dome, formed from glue-laminated timber and ETFE (a transparent, lightweight material) that maximises daylight while reducing structural weight. The roof is designed to maximise passive solar gain year-round while providing full ventilation during summer for cooling. It will also be clad with the latest generation of insulated polymer pillows. This dynamic, spherical design demands innovative engineering, precise construction methods, and close collaboration between architects and engineering teams.

Main structural elements consist of a reinforced concrete sub-structure and retaining wall, with pad foundations providing a base to the internal steel columns supporting the Level 1 floor.

An exposed steel structure supports the upper floor, with the majority of materials being green steel, produced using electric arc furnaces powered by renewable electricity delivering a significant reduction in embodied carbon.

Where cutting edge facilities meet limitless creative potential

Inside, FIDA will house a suite of cutting‑edge facilities, from inspiring classrooms and a flexible open‑plan teaching and exhibition floor to social areas, a science lab, a large lecture theatre, maker and engineering spaces, a digital prototyping suite and a photography studio. This new centre will enable FIDA’s currently online and holiday‑based programme to expand, creating opportunities for many more young people.

Delivering maximum value for the customer

Robertson was chosen to bring the Futures Institute at Dollar Academy to life, a project designed by the world-renowned architectural firm Grimshaw. Through early and ongoing collaboration with the client’s design team and supply chain, Robertson Construction Central East are working to ensure every element of the project is aligned with the client’s vision, budget and long-term goals. Since December 2022, the team has been working closely with stakeholders to deliver a solution that not only meets the highest standards of construction but also enhances educational impact and future operational efficiency.

A global platform for Scottish education

Thoughtfully designed to equip the next generation with new skills and the mindset to thrive in a complex world, FIDA combines interdisciplinary learning, real-world challenges, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals, enhancing education in new and inspiring ways.

Opening horizons to young people from diverse backgrounds, FIDA offers accessible and engaging courses where pupils can participate in global issues like climate change, inequality, ethical business and sustainable design while networking with industry leaders, experts, universities, charities and local authorities.

Clackmannanshire secondary pupils have already played an integral role in co-designing the curriculum and building what will serve as the home of FIDA. This approach transforms education by making it a collaborative process created with young people’s active input and participation, ensuring it truly meets their needs and aspirations.

Building with community benefit in mind

This project is also supporting local employment and apprentices within the area, with Robertson working alongside our supply chain to ensure the benefits of the build reach the wider community.

“Dollar Academy has always promoted the transformative power of education, and this idea is at the very heart of FIDA. The new building will create a world-class teaching and learning space that nurtures creativity, critical thinking and collaboration.

“The building’s unique design promotes fusion between all subjects - enabling pupils to see how the knowledge gained from one discipline can be used in an impactful way in another. It is our hope that learners throughout Scotland will have the chance to undertake FIDA courses during their time at school.”
