Inspiring Future Talent at Chesterfield College
Creating opportunities through work experience
The Engineering & Life Sciences Building at Chesterfield College is creating meaningful pathways into the construction industry for local students, combining modern learning facilities with hands-on industry experience that supports future careers.
Delivered by Robertson, the project has gone beyond construction to provide work placements, apprenticeships and direct engagement opportunities that give students real-world insight into live project environments.
One student to benefit is Billy, who joined the project through work experience while studying a T Level in Design, Planning and Surveying in Construction at Chesterfield College. Initially intending to pursue civil engineering, his perspective changed after experiencing live site environments first-hand on Robertson projects, including the Engineering & Life Sciences Building.
Before his placement, Billy had never been on a live construction site. Through hands-on experience, he was introduced to day-to-day site operations, project coordination, meetings and the range of disciplines involved in delivering a major build. This exposure helped him understand the reality of site management and the opportunities available within the industry.
Supported by the site team, Billy was encouraged to get involved in practical tasks while learning from experienced professionals. Following his placements, he was offered a Trainee Site Manager role with Robertson alongside a fully funded apprenticeship in Construction Management.
Now back on site at Chesterfield College as part of the project team, Billy combines academic study with practical experience, continuing to develop his skills in a live working environment.
Billy’s journey reflects the impact of early engagement and meaningful work experience in shaping future careers. The project is helping create clear pathways into employment while supporting the development of local talent and strengthening connections within the Chesterfield community.
