How timber frame buildings support the circular economy

The circular economy in the construction industry

Assuring a sustainable future is at the very heart of everything we do, and supporting the circular economy is central to our principles as a business.

By limiting waste and maximising reusability of materials, we can make a positive impact on the environment and limit carbon use throughout the construction process.

We measure our carbon use, the percentage of materials we divert from landfill, and a range of other important environmental metrics. And the circular economy is central to our approach to meeting our bold sustainability targets that drive us forward as a business.

It’s something we’re passionate about and our offsite solutions support our sustainability in construction company-wide ambitions.

Increasing reusability

Reusability of materials is very important to us and the approach we take reflects this.

We use standardised components and a panelised build system that allows for reuse, and we have standardised our build system to both improve circularity and optimise manufacturing.

We also use recycled plastic sheeting to protect timber frame panels when in storage and transit.

Combined with our focus on reducing waste, these steps in maximising reusability have helped to reduce our carbon use and limited our projects’ impact on the environment, assuring a sustainable future.

We teamed up with the Research Institute of Sweden and Edinburgh Napier University in a research project which demonstrated that up to 95 per cent of the timber used in our products could be reused if buildings are deconstructed.

Reducing waste

By cutting down on waste, we use fewer natural materials, and less energy.

Through a DfMA (Design for Manufacture and Assembly) process, we reduce waste through optimised offsite manufacturing processes.

Using industry leading BRE Smartwaste software, we track materials and utilise the data to analyse hotspots to see how we can reduce waste.

And when we do have leftover material from projects, this is reused or sent to be recycled by local contractors.

We care about the future of our planet and the circular economy is central to our mission to assure a sustainable future.
