Cutting-edge science space

Robertson constructed the state-of-the-art Science Teaching Hub for The University of Aberdeen to provide specialist teaching, training and learning for students across disciplines including chemistry, medical sciences, biological sciences and geosciences.

The fully digitised space offers a range of advanced technologies and new ways of working that will familiarise and prepare students with skills for careers in science and industry.

The Hub integrates laboratories from around the campus into a single dedicated facility, increasing flexibility and efficiency on a technology platform. It drives forward the University's long-term strategy to maintain its status as a world-class higher education institution.

Our journey to net zero

We demonstrated our ongoing commitment to sustainability through a variety of measures. These included:

  • designed to BREEAM Excellent standards;
  • innovative, 100% gravity-fed drainage solution for surface water run-off;
  • reducing energy use through efficient site cabins and manual wind-up MEWPs;
  • minimising unnecessary emissions through electric car charging stations and avoiding diesel plant and equipment wherever possible;
  • recycled drilling pipes, reclaimed from the oil and gas industry, for steel driven piles;
  • extensive recycling, such as reusable silicone sealant tubes, pallet take-back schemes, donating surplus materials to the community and PPE recycling;
  • extensive off-site manufacturing, including: precast concrete cladding and flooring, prefabricated windows and plumbing pipework modules;
  • 96.84% of project waste diverted from landfill.

Valuable opportunities for education

Overall, we used the project as a context for learning at all levels from primary school children to university students, graduates and adults looking to get into work. We delivered classroom-based workshops, careers support, site visits and work experience where suitable. This educational work raises aspirations and awareness of the opportunities in construction, and helps young people make informed decisions about their future.

The project had contributed £8.77m total social value representing a SVA (social value add) equivalent to 44% of the project value.
