St John’s Hospital is the regional hand trauma unit and is the referral and treatment centre for patients throughout Lothian.

RMF Health (comprising Robertson and FES) delivered this project as a joint venture under Healthcare Frameworks 2. It is the first phase of a proposed expansion of the orthopaedic services on site that will ultimately provide additional accommodation for head and neck services.

I’m delighted - this refurbishment will vastly improve the access for patients to these services.

– Aris Tyrothoulakis, Interim Site Director, St John’s Hospital, NHS Lothian

St John’s Hospital is the regional hand trauma unit and is the referral and treatment centre for patients throughout Lothian. As well as the additional theatre, the reconfiguration of the existing ward will create a new day surgery unit with two theatres, and will improve access for patients requiring hand trauma surgery.

A new theatre had been identified as an area for improvement, and will mean more patients can be seen. Patients waiting for hand trauma surgery can sometimes be admitted for an overnight stay, and this refurbishment will provide additional capacity for up to ten theatre sessions per week.
