Two Robertson employees took part in this Learn Live session with Lancashire LEP, to share some of their experience with students in the North West of England who are considering careers in construction.

In the video, Paul Millea, regional SHE Manager explained the variety of his job. He visits different construction sites twice a month to check for compliance and enjoys the variety and seeing the progress of each project.
Originally he qualified in Construction Project Management at Salford University. As an experienced employee, Paul takes a mentoring role, encouraging and mentoring younger people at Robertson if they are keen and enthusiastic to learn.
Ryan Unwin, Assistant Quantity Surveyor is based on one site – at Newfield School in Blackburn, a new facility being constructed for children with special educational needs. The commercial aspect of the Quantity Surveyor role appealed to him, such as placing orders with subcontractors, evaluating work and managing payments.
Ryan has completed a BTEC Level 3 qualification in Construction after school. Alongside his job at Robertson, he spends one day per week at Salford University doing a degree in Quantity Surveying.
Ryan stressed the benefit of construction apprenticeships, and how this route to a career was better suited to him than pursuing A-levels and a full-time university degree.
