State-of-the-art sports hub for East Dunbartonshire Council

Robertson completed a first-class sporting facility in Bishopbriggs for East Dunbartonshire Council and the East Dunbartonshire Culture and Leisure Trust.

Encouraging sporting activity in East Dunbartonshire

The Huntershill Sports Hub replaced three grass pitches and a blaes athletics track which had become unfit for purpose.

The Sports Hub is designed to encourage sporting activity in the East Dunbartonshire Council area. Providing these first-class sporting facilities will maximises track and field time for a range of local clubs, individuals and organisations in the area, enabling uptake and participation in local sports groups to thrive.

Increasing access, encouraging participation and inspiring people to become more active were the key goals. The Sports Hub will undoubtedly contribute to achieving better social and local health outcomes for the East Dunbartonshire community.

A sports pavilion and pitches

Before full construction could start, Robertson managed buried contaminants and improved drainage on the site.

The project included the construction of:

  • access road and associated parking;
  • extensive, multi-use sports pavilion including 10 changing rooms and recreation hall;
  • community rooms, meeting rooms and an office within the main pavilion;
  • external courtyard and terrace;
  • three floodlit all-weather tennis courts;
  • six-lane, international-standard athletics track with field athletics areas;
  • and a resurfaced, all-weather 3G football pitch with floodlighting and fencing.

Community engagement

Our clients, East Dunbartonshire Council and the EDLC Trust, conducted extensive consultation with stakeholders, including governing bodies and clubs of various sports.

Robertson continued this theme of close partnership by quickly establishing good working relationships with our local supply chain and engaging with the local community during the project.

The site received a 'Beyond Compliance Award' from the Considerate Constructors Scheme.

Training and employment

The project gave rise to numerous local training and employment prospects, both through the Tigers Training programme and in partnership with local schools and colleges.

Nine young apprentices, five from the EDC local authority area, were given the opportunity to develop their careers during the project. All of the apprentices progressed following the project – either securing full-time employment in construction, going on to formal education in construction, or to traineeships with subcontracted firms – following their apprenticeships.

Three graduates and members of Robertson's Young Professionals Group worked on Annickbank Innovation Campus[A1] and continue to progress their careers in construction.

In addition, Robertson supported the 'Get Into Engineering' initiative during the project. This 10-week course from Clyde Gateway and University of the West of Scotland is designed to introduce young people to the world of engineering and inspire them to further their studies and careers in the sector. Ten pupils – five from St Mungo's Academy in Glasgow and five from Trinity High School in Rutherglen – worked with Robertson and made visits to several construction sites, including Huntershill Sports Hub.
