Enhancing one of Scotland’s biggest hospitals

RMF Health delivered a programme of works at the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh for NHS Lothian. This is a mixture of projects comprising new build, refurbishment and infrastructure upgrades.

Robertson refurbished and extended the haematology and oncology areas within the hospital as part of the 'Cancer Centre Enabling Project'. A new renal unit was also created. A new oncology building houses Linac equipment and provides administration facilities. In addition, the refurbishment of a cancer assessment unit and wards will greatly enhance patient treatment. Alongside all of this, an infrastructure project provides a new district heating system, upgrades to the electrical distribution system and a new energy centre.

The programme of works was procured through NHS Frameworks Scotland and awarded to RMF Health – a consortium consisting of Robertson and FES.

Assuring a sustainable future

The infrastructure project will greatly improve the hospital's carbon footprint, helping to meet the 2040 sustainability targets set by the Scottish Government as well as minimising long-term running costs.

A new district heating system will be delivered in phase with a new energy centre targeting the 2040 sustainability targets set by the Scottish Government, reducing losses in hot water generation by 28%.

Ensuring best value and quality

By working collaboratively with clinicians and user groups on the Western General Programme of Works, along with architects Oberlanders, we developed the desired interior design well within budget. The delay of the Department of Clinical Neurosciences (DCN) moving to the new Royal Hospital for Sick Children provided us with additional time. We used the time and cost savings to improve access for patients, staff and visitors by improving the entrances to the new haematology department and improve ventilation to the new rooms and spaces created.

Supporting NHS employees

Problems with lack of staff parking on site is a challenge during construction and would become more of an issue as the project progressed. To counter this, the team arranged to use the old vacant Royal Victoria Hospital site for some accommodation, materials stores and 100 spaces for NHS staff.
