Senior Perth and Kinross councillors today (Wednesday 7th December) visited Alyth to see progress on the new Council house development in the town.
The development is being built by the Stirling based infrastructure, support services and construction group Robertson.
Council Leader, Councillor Ian Miller, and Housing and Health Convener, Councillor Peter Barrett visited the Springbank Road development to see how the build is coming along.
A total of 19 affordable homes will be built in Alyth:
8 x 2 bedroom apartments (2 people)
3 x 3 bedroom apartments (4 people)
3 x 4 bedroom apartments (5 people)
3 x 4 bedroom apartments (6 people)
1 x 5 bedroom apartment (7 people)
1 x 5 bedroom apartment (8 people)
It is part of an overall project by Perth & Kinross Council to build 120 houses in locations around Perth and Kinross, making an important contribution to increasing the availability of affordable rented homes locally.
The Council has made several successful bids to the Scottish Government's Scottish Government's Incentivising Council House Building scheme to help pay for the programme.
During their visit the Councillors met representatives from Robertson to discuss progress.
Councillor Miller said: "The Council house-building programme is one of the most ambitious projects we have undertaken, and I am delighted to see it is progressing so well, not just in Alyth but at sites across Perth and Kinross. These represent the first Council houses built in the area for 25 years.
"New houses in Methven and Perth have already been completed, and so many families will be spending their first Christmas in their new home. Work is also ongoing at other sites and these houses will be completed next year.
"We have made a commitment to improving access to social housing in Perth and Kinross and the construction of these 120 homes is a key part of the work we are doing to achieve this.
Councillor Barrett added: "The Council is working very hard to ensure that local people can have an affordable roof over their heads. The start of work here in Alyth is excellent news, and I look forward to the completion of these homes.
"The construction of these homes here and in other locations around Perth and Kinross is making a real difference to our new tenants' lives.
"We will continue to look at things we can to do to bring even more affordable housing on stream here in Perth and Kinross."
Bob Gray, Regional Operations Director for Robertson, said: "The work on the Alyth Homes project has progressed very well over the past seven months and we are on track with our completion date of late spring 2012, by which time all 19 homes will be complete and available to tenants.
"We're delighted to be working in partnership with Perth & Kinross Council and I'd like to thank them for their continued support on the project and to all the team here on site, who have worked really hard, come rain or shine."
