Transforming underused Park & Ride land in Stockport into an ambulance hub
Underutilised space within a large Stockport Park & Ride is being transformed into an ambulance station to serve the local community.
Replacing an outdated ambulance station as part of the wider regeneration of Stockport, the new two-storey development will provide a large garage and parking spaces for 31 ambulances and 48 members of staff.

Transforming an underused space
The site currently comprises a 1.4-hectare car park and bus station, operated by Stagecoach, with a bus service that connects Stockport Town Centre to the wider East Manchester area. Only half of the car park is currently used as it is oversized for the demand, creating the opportunity to use the remaining space for this project.
The new ambulance station, awarded directly through the Procure Partnership Framework, will include offices, meeting rooms, a staff dining / rest room, storage for equipment and medicines, a vehicle preparation area, and staff lockers and showers. On-site parking is also proposed for 48 staff and visitor parking spaces (including seven EV charging spaces) as well as ambulance parking for 31 vehicles.
Our works consist of a structural steel frame with concrete floors, SFS inner leaf with a fibre cement cladding system externally, aluminium windows, sectional overhead doors to the garage bays, internal works, MEP installation, lift installation and external works.
The development will create 877m2 of space across its two floors.
A live environment
Minimising disruption to the local communities we work in always forms an important part of our planning, and we put in place mitigations to limit our impact.
One element of this is the planning for deliveries. We have agreed that all unloading and distribution of materials will be carried out within the site boundary, ensuring the surrounding roads are not impacted by site vehicles and traffic. Delivery times will be scheduled and pre-planned to ensure busy periods are avoided.
We agreed a direct traffic route to site with all supply chain prior to commencement of the works, to ensure that the adjacent roads and local businesses were not disrupted by standing traffic during construction.
To ensure materials are brought onto site quickly and efficiently, we will also add clear signage on the approach to the site, giving our deliveries clear directions. And a dedicated Robertson Traffic Marshall will control and manage the gated access during site operational hours.
Thanks to these important steps, our impact on the local roads and businesses has been reduced to absolute minimum.
